The ancient city of Béziers can be found in the middle of the wine fields, and is about an hour away by car. This city was very important in the Roman era, and was destroyed during the Albigensian crusade in the 13th century. At present, the city takes a central position in the wine industry and is also important for rugby. Béziers was built on top of a rocky plateau, and from this point you have a splendid view of the surrounding area and the river l’Orb. The Canal du Midi crosses the city and to the west you find the Fonseranes’ water slopes. This is an ingenious piece of engineering: it has a rise and fall of 25 metres.

The promenade, named after the architect of Canal Midi: Paul Riquet, connects the newer parts to the old centre of Béziers. The promenade stretches out from the neo-classical theatre in the North to the Plateau des Poetes, a 19th century park in English style in the South of Béziers. Other tourist attractions are the Eglise des Penitents and the Cathedrale Saint Nazaire. In the West of Beziers you find the remains of Oppiddum Enserune (500 BC), which are located close to the Via Domitia.
